Ten Tiny Breaths turned out much differently than I was expecting. Well, actually I didn’t know what to expect at all, so it was a very pleasant surprise. I think there’s this misconception that all New Adults are generally the same and basically amount to hot college age people having lots of sex with a sprinkle of deeper issues. Well, this is not that. Kacey is holding on to a lot of anger. It’s totally understandable, if not the healthiest way to live. She’s packed up herself and her fifteen year old sister to move out on their own after some problems occur at their aunt and uncle’s home. Here’s where she can start over and build a better life, and possibly find love with the sexy neighbor.

Kacey is a tough girl to get to know. She keeps people more than arms length away at all times. Sometimes literally since she can’t even tolerate the idea of someone shaking her hand. She does kickboxing to relieve that pent-up anger, but she does nothing to rid herself of it and that causes major issues for her and those around her. Of course, Kacey doesn’t realize this until way too late. Kacey has never dealt with her grief after the accident that nearly took her life and stole away her loved ones.I really liked how the author presented PTSD. Often people associate it with soldiers coming back from war, but it happens to so many other people for a variety of reasons.

The most unexpected part of Ten Tiny Breaths was one of the settings: a strip club! When Storm first offers Kacey a job there, I worried it would be a cheesy gimmick to bring in more sex. I was super wrong! I felt like Kacey at first, a little weirded out about being in a place with so much nudity, but then we both relaxed and it mostly felt normal. It was just another setting, much like the apartment or the Everglades. It did bring in plenty of entertainment though, particularly Storm’s act. It’s also the setting for one of the more important scenes where we see how much help Kacey really needs.

Of course there’s a romance. A steamy one at that! Trent is beyond hot, but from the very moment I met him, I knew something was off. I felt like he tried a little too hard to win Kacey’s affection, and always seemed to be appearing out of nowhere. A few more chapters in and several clues later, I had my theory. At the end when all is revealed, I was right! This situation is beyond screwed up, but it all makes perfect sense, even if I can’t for a second understand what the heck is happening in that man’s brain.

Ten Tiny Breaths isn’t all gloom and doom though. There’s plenty of humor spread throughout, even if a lot of it is from Kacey to cover up her real feelings. I also really enjoyed the supporting characters, especially Storm and Ben. They each play and important role in helping to balance Kacey. While it didn’t blow me away, I still very much enjoyed Ten Tiny Breaths and look forward to more from this author!

Ten Tiny Breaths K A Tucker 9780991686001 Books Reviews

At first I past off Kacey's personality because of her past but as the story moved along it just didn't make sense. She says she can avoid hot attractive guys for her life... Yet one look at Trent and she's on her knees. It's pathetic really I wanted to cringe. There were parts where I really wanted to give up but seeing that I bought the book... I HAD to finish it. Who knows? Maybe it would get better. But it didn't. Kacey got more and more annoying. She was extremely rude in parts where she didn't need to be. I get it. Her parents died. Her friend died. Her boyfriend died. But really? The drama was extremely over dramatic. (spoiler) WHY did Trent leave her just because it scared him. Why didn't he stay.. Maybe make her feel better? But he ran? He didn't run away for 2 days. Not 7 days. But 2+ WEEKS. It frustrates me to the core that a grown man didn't know better then to run away when hard times come. And why did she forgive him??? It was so easy too. Considering all that she's gone through.... After an apology and 5min.. She had her lips on him like nothing ever happened.

I don't recommend this book because the plot and characters are annoying. I should start reading reviews before I waste my money. I'm sorry, but I really wanted to like it... But I couldn't.
Okay. So, I'm having a really hard time trying to come up with words to express my feelings about this book. The first book I read by this author was "Burying Water". The story was excellent but K.A. Tucker's writing was just out of this world. Beautiful. Poetic. It almost made me want to sing some of her lines. After that book, I knew I had to read more from her. Seeing that this book had such great reviews (and now I see why), I decided to pick it up and let myself get lost in it. I found my way back to reality with tears streaming down my face. This story really did it for me. It was beautiful. No, it was PHENOMENAL !! A story that is filled with tragedy and heartache, yet the author still managed to create a heartfelt love story amongst all the chaos. I really don't know how to emphasize what a wonderful story this was.

In her acknowledgements, the author mentions how she worries about her kids getting behind the wheel with so many drunk drivers out there. Those words truly hit close to home since I worry about my son each and every day as he continues to near the age of obtaining his license. So I understand very well. I'm sure it's something ALL mothers worry about daily. Mrs. Tucker, if you're reading this, I want you to know that I have a friend who got into an accident just 3 days ago and yes, she was drunk driving. Thank God she's alive - although she really messed herself up badly - and that her accident was against a tree and not someone else whom she could have hurt real bad or even killed. I am going to force her to read this book, since she has no choice but to be in bed rest for the next 6 months, and I really think that ur words (which you mentioned in your last line of your acknowledgements) will come into effect. It will change her life and for you, it will be monumental. Thank you for a wonderful read. I only hope that my books can, someday, make the same impact on others as you have made on me. I can't wait to read more from you.
