Beverly Cleary's Henry and Ramona series are widely regarded as some the finest kids books out there, and for good reason. This was one I never read before, so I was pleased to check it out. It's a very funny book that has Henry get into a number of scrapes, most of them involving his dog Ribsy, but in the end everything comes out alright. Kids (and just about anyone) will still appreciate this book today.
Ribsy is one of Beverly Cleary's series on the children of Klikitat Street in Portland Oregon. It is pure 50's childhood and very entertaining. I use this as an independent reading selection for groups of my fourth grade ESL students. They can easily read it on their own, helping one another on the vocabulary, and they stay interested. All have asked to take it home to finish it. If you're a teacher who is looking to keep your class occupied while you hone in on students with learning problems, then let them read any of this series and they will let you work with your group for a half hour without interruption.

If you're looking for a good gift for a child in 3d, 4th or 5th grade, this is one.
The first chapter book I read 50 years ago. I love dogs and so I couldn't put it down until Ribsy was safe again. I recommend this book for 3rd or 4th graders who love dogs.
My son loves the Henry and Ribsy books, especially this one--which is told from Ribsy's point of view. However, he does not like the newer illustrations that turn up in some of the more recent paperback versions of this book. So, I was super excited to find this particular reprint with the original illustrations. It's just like the one we checked out from the library over the summer. I am saving it for Christmas, but I know he will be very excited to receive it. This book is a must for any boy (or girl) who loves a dog.
Since it was taken from Ribsy's viewpoint, and not Henry Huggins', it seemed a little odd at first. However, as the storyline progressed I became caught up in Ribsy's dilemma and was anxious to find out how he would be reunited with Henry. Quite enjoyable and somewhat of a ride down memory lane even though I did not read Ribsy or some of the other Henry Huggins books by Beverly Cleary, I remember them from when I was a youngster and could identify with Henry when I was about that age.
I think Ribsy is a wonderful book. I read it to my youngest son many years ago. We loved it together. I have to admit that I bought it again because I wanted to read it to my granddaughters who now have a dog. I thought it might help them to think like a dog. They weren't interested. They were reading a fantasy, allegory sort of story. No offense intended, but I read part of the other book and think Ribsy is much better. It is a simple, sometimes heartrending, story of a dog who gets separated from his boy. I won't give up. I have a grandson who will be old enough is a couple of years. Obviously, I highly recommend this book.
I am 32 and still have very fond memories of reading this book. I think it's still very sweet and charming as an adult. I bought this for my niece, a reluctant reader, hoping to get her excited about books. It worked. After she read this, she asked for other books by Cleary and Im thrilled there are so many more for her to enjoy.
