The Foundation Trilogy Isaac Asimov 9780380508563 Books Reviews

I read this trilogy when I was a teenager and loved it. All that I remembered when I ordered a copy recently was something about a character called the "Mule" and a musical instrument he played that caused hallucinations in the listeners.

I'm almost 60 now, and I still think this is a classic trilogy, but I didn't love it like I did when I was a kid. It's tedious in many ways, overly long at times, and the characters don't seem real to me with the exceptions of 3 women in an otherwise nearly all-male cast story. I am glad I reread it, however, but I can't say I'd recommend it to anyone except hardcore Asimov and/or sci-fi fans.
This is an amazing trilogy and everyone should read it. Mainly for this reason, everyone has taken Lord of the Rings and DUNE and told those stories over and over again a thousand different ways. For some reason, even though these books are 40 years old, they are still fresh. They are different, and they are great.

Don't read books 4-6 though. They are not original. The author himself admitted he tried to write three books, but his publisher pushed him to write more. Let it stop where Asimov himself tried to stop. You'll thank yourself for it later.
I read these novels as a kid, and the subsequent books in the series as an adult. I've been through the entire collection twice before and had forgotten how good they are! They are very high on my desert island classics list.
Good story but the crappy futuristic sound effects are super loud and painful to hear. I had to turn it up each time to hear the dialog and the. Turn it down when the transitional sound effects played between chapters because I would have lost my hearing or blown out my ear drums otherwise ( only slight exaggeration)
I read this back in the 1960s, and was swept away by Asimov's tale of a failing galactic empire, and the science of psycho-history. I've heard rumors that Roland Emmerich (the man responsible for the Godzilla & Independence Day movies) has a film version of this book in the works, ([....]), so I thought I'd re-visit the book before Mr. Emmerich does.

After a half century, this is still a great read, although the dialog is a bit more stilted and some of the characters are more one-dimensional than I remembered. I've found that much of the science fiction that I adored as a young man has not aged well - at least, not for me - because so much of it was originally written for a pulp fiction audience. But unlike many science fiction writers, Asimov was influenced less by other producers of sf, and more by books like the Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire; consequently the reader is in for a much more thought provoking ride with this book than he is with much of what passes for science fiction today.

Michael Dirda's introduction to the Everyman's Library edition explains the genesis of this story in a way that made it even more interesting. If you've never read this, be sure you do *before* you go to see Emmerich's movie.
the 1983 leatherbound gilded edition is wonderful, I have bought 2 copies, one to replace the third I stole from my father, and one for myself. I still have the first one which was separating from the spine from wear. I regularly re-read the entire collection, and consider it my most valued possession, regardless of its monetary value. As always Asimov blends hope with realism as he explores humanity and its possible course of future history. The only negative about this book is that it shows what a piece of crap movie will smith's "I, Robot" really was.
When I was in college I read the seven Foundation novels going to and from school and work on the subway. I have always wanted a complete soft or hardcover publication of the trilogy, but it was never available unless I wanted to order an over seas copy. While I wish it had a more fanciful cover, this hardcover edition appropriately has a photo of a young Asimov since this is a part of a library of hardcover books that celebrate many different authors and genres of fiction. Whether it is William Faukner or Saul Bellow, there is something for everyone. Asimov is in good company too. It is nice to see the Grandmaster of the genre celebrated as literature. I highly recommend picking up this classy edition if you do not already have the trilogy or if you want to start a library of great authors of American literature.
This trilogy has an unassailable place as one of the best, if not the very best series in science fiction. I would give five stars for the novels itself. However, this review is to make others aware that the fifth printing is missing two pages, and this problem is fixed in the sixth printing. As these are the only two versions I've seen, I cannot speak to the printings before 5th or after 6th (if there are any).

The missing content happens on page 454, where the fifth printing cuts to the Fourth Interlude abruptly after the “you have eaten?” question. See photos for comparisons of the two editions.
This book was fascinating. I had never heard about Asimov before coming across this book, but will definitely seek out more by him.
